MY STORY

My name is Jamie Lord, and I am an award-winning Artist and Modelmaker who is captivated by the delicate and complex beauty of the natural world. I explore this fascination through wildlife sculpture.

From the age of four, I would always be seen with a pair of scissors and paper in my hands, where I would create paper birds from scrap loo rolls. It was here where my creative journey began, making anything and everything, getting materials from what I called my ‘busy box’. Growing up in the Cotswolds, I was exposed to such a diverse range of wildlife and nature. I would often spot a bird outside and research it in my favourite book, looking at the wing shape and colours, before making it out of cardboard and paper. This fuelled my passion for the natural world and taught me to observe detail.

My first sculpture was of a white rhino using air-dry clay and epoxy putties. Now, I enjoy working with a diverse range of materials and techniques, adding layer upon layer of detail to bring each subject to life. From crafting oak sea turtle shells to hand-cutting individual paper feathers, as well as using traditional clay, I continually strive for excellence in my craft. This passion for wildlife has contributed to my realistic artistic style.

Through my love for the natural world, I have developed an ability to observe detail closely. Whenever possible, I prefer to work from life, and I emphasise that careful observation of a subject's behaviour and instinctive and physical traits, along with anatomical research, results in an intriguing and powerful artwork. I aim to capture the true essence, character, and spirit of each subject and believe that when you look into a sculpture's eyes, you should feel life as if it is looking back at you.

I graduated from Arts University Bournemouth in Modelmaking, where I was exposed to a variety of machinery, materials, and professional techniques. I am also fascinated by the fantasy genre, specifically secondary worlds such as Professor Tolkien’s Middle-Earth and J. K. Rowling’s Wizarding World. This has encouraged me to create prop replica weapons, miniatures, and character sculptures from these films which I could explore further whilst being at university.

I still create paper birds just as I did when I was young, and still enjoy it all the same. But most importantly I love to create and always have, and always will.
